Becoming a Tempered Leader

In today's world of rapid change and uncertainty, the question isn't just about learning the skills to lead change, but rather, can you survive it? As leaders, we often find ourselves facing immense resistance, internal and external, when trying to bring about transformative change. The journey to becoming a resilient leader, capable of hewing hope from the mountain of despair, requires dedication, courage, and a commitment to personal transformation.

In my book, Tempered Resilience, I drew inspiration from the blacksmith's shop, where raw iron is forged into tempered steel. There we learn that resilience is not about becoming smarter or tougher, but about becoming stronger and more flexible. Tempering, the process of transformation, involves heating, holding, hammering, and cooling - a repetitive and deliberate practice that leads to the development of a tool capable of shaping and creating.

Resilient leadership, too, requires intentional effort and ongoing transformation. To find the strength to face resistance and adversity, consider the following essential elements:

  1. Humble, Honest Reflection: Take time for introspection, understanding your strengths and weaknesses, and acknowledging areas for growth. Embrace the feedback of others and be open to self-improvement.

  2. Secure, Supportive Relationships: Surround yourself with a network of trusted allies who provide encouragement, guidance, and constructive criticism. Strong relationships foster resilience and create a support system during challenging times.

  3. Life of Practices: Adopt daily practices that align with your values and vision. These habits can help you stay grounded, maintain clarity in decision-making, and remain focused on your purpose.

Resilient leadership is not a one-time achievement but a continuous journey of growth and learning. Through the forge of transformation, you can become a tempered leader - strong, agile, discerning, and compassionate. This resilience not only enables you to navigate change personally but also empowers you to lead your organizations through transformational shifts.

May you find the courage to embrace the forge of transformation and lead your organizations to new heights. Together, as resilient leaders, we can navigate change, inspire others, and build a brighter future.
